Volvo Construction Equipment recently expanded its demolition excavator portfolio with the debut of the EC500 Straight Boom at the National Demolition Association Show. This addition is not just any excavator—it’s a 50-ton crawler variant derived from the standard EC500, which premiered at ConExpo 2023. However, this machine distinguishes itself with an imposing 25.5-foot straight boom, bestowing it with a pin-height increase of 30% over its curved boom counterpart.
The EC500 Straight Boom is not only about reach; it also provides enhanced stability, thanks to a hefty counterweight that’s 6,610 pounds more substantial than the standard model. This added weight anchors the machine firmly, and, for added practicality, it includes a hydraulic feature that simplifies the removal of the counterweight for easier transportation between job sites.
Tony den Hoed, Director of Demolition Strategic Accounts for Volvo CE, points out, “Our latest EC500 Straight Boom delivers a robust 50-ton solution that broadens the spectrum for demanding tasks. Tailored for endurance, the EC500 Straight Boom comes equipped with demolition-ready features, including guarded boom/bucket cylinders, extensive track protection, advanced underside covers, and structures designed to withstand side impacts.
Operator safety in the field of demolition is paramount, and Volvo has taken it to a new level. The carefully upgraded demolition cab comes fortified with rollover protection systems and mounted guards built to shield operators from any debris. This cab is kitted out with single-piece glass that’s half-inch thick and resistant to high-impact forces on both roof and front windows, now also featuring a standard washer and wiper system that aids in cleanliness.
The interior’s cutting-edge appointments, like a high-definition Co-Pilot screen, keyless ignition, and provisions for both wired and wireless phone charging, bring convenience to the operator’s fingertips, alongside a newfound work mode selector.
When it comes to operating dynamics, Volvo introduces electric joysticks in the new EC500, granting operators precision control over the hydraulic pumps and enabling independent boom movements without hampering track function. This promotes a blend of safety and comfort during operation.
Operators can also benefit from Comfort Drive Control, which simplifies the navigation of the excavator, and the hydraulic customization settings are safely storable on the Co-Pilot system for future access.
Stepping up its technology suite, Volvo includes applications like Volvo Dig Assist and Lift Assist, easily accessed through the Co-Pilot interface. Excavator operation is further revolutionized with Volvo Active Control, which for the first time in this class, offers automated grade control to optimize excavator movements and diminish operator fatigue.
Volvo doesn’t stop there. The EC500 is fitted with Volvo Smart View featuring Obstacle Detection, providing a panoramic view and alerting system, guarding against all types of obstacles, animate or otherwise.
The excavator is streamlined for effective attachment operation thanks to an expanded auxiliary return line. Unique to Volvo, it introduces industry-leading direct plumbing of the case drain line to its tank, mitigating back pressure in the rotation circuit.
